The reason digital writers should have an overarching intent for their writing — and how they can find their WHY

Many digital writers struggle to gain traction despite writing great niche content. In my eyes, they fall for a common misconception: that writing niche content in itself makes their content unique and enjoyable.

You don’t outline your text by the topic you choose. You outline your text through your personal writing style. And the predecessor of your writing style is your overarching intent.

In other words: your content is your what. Your writing style is your how. Your overarching intent is the why.

Having an overarching intent makes your content unique and recognizable. People remember you. When you create your own category, you change the rules of the writing game.

Suddenly, your writing doesn’t need to be the best, it just needs to be different.

Well, someone might ask, how do I find my intent?

It’s all about knowing your why and expressing it in your writing. Your why is your purpose.

People always talk about how they are struggling to find their purpose. If you are one of them, I’d argue you already have one.

If you have set any goals, you have a purpose. Ask yourself “why did I set this goal?” and dig deeper until you hit the bedrock, your pickaxe breaks and your why lies at your feet like a shiny diamond.

Then, define your why for writing in one sentence, or even better, in one word.

And while editing your work, keep asking yourself:

“Does my writing resemble my why?”

If it does, congratulations! Your writing just leveled-up.
